Lasers for cutting
CO2 and fiber lasers can be basically used for laser cutting. These lasers are incorporated in 2D platform, ventricular or 3D robotic systems. The main advantages of 2D systems are high speed, reproducibility and stability of cut, which is important for serial production. 3D systems, especially utilizing robotic arms or multi axis linear systems, enabling 3D blank is machined with complex spatial trajectories without the need of multiple clamping. Thanks to the very rapid development of the robotic arms can be normally achieved accuracy around 0.001 mm (as with driving repeatability or during actual transit trajectory).
Interesting application of laser cutting is REMOTE CUTTING. The remote laser beam cutting technology applies a well focused laser beam, which, by the help of quickly moving mirrors (highly dynamic galvo scanner), is positioned along the cutting contour of the component´s surface. Disadvantage of this technique is high weight of processing head, this disadvantage is replaced by extreme contour speed of beam in area of F-theta lenses. Laser-remote-cutting is the laser cutting of very thin and sensitive materials (especially with stationary optical system), for example battery welding or contour welding components for Automotive and Aerospace,
Advantage of laser cutting:
- long service lifetime up to 100,000 hours
- high efficiency of production
- quick return of investment
- possibility to cut non-metal materials with high speed (such as plastics, polymers, ceramics, wood or fabric)
- small heat- affected zone of the cut material
- high precision repeatability
- thin kerf width
- non-contact machining
